Rufaro Murenza: A Talented Sculptor

Rufaro Murenza’s journey in the world of art has been nothing short of phenomenal. Born in Zimbabwe in 1980, Rufaro has consistently made a mark in the realm of 3D sculpture. His achievements ensure his place as a formidable artist, particularly noted for his repeated recognition at the National Arts Merit Awards (NAMA).

NAMA Recognitions and Achievements

Rufaro’s talent was first recognized at the NAMA awards in 2015 when he won the 3D Sculpture category. Since then, he has remained a prominent figure in the national art scene, being a finalist in 2014, 2016, 2017, and most recently in 2020. With such consistent acknowledgement, it appears “the sky is the limit” for Rufaro’s artistic endeavors.

Mentorship and Artistic Growth

Rufaro’s skills were sharpened through early mentorship under the world-renowned Zimbabwean sculptor Joe Mutasa at Chapungu Sculpture Park in Msasa, Harare. This platform exposed him to works by other legendary artists such as Tapfuma Gutsa, Nicholas Mukomberanwa, and Eddie Masaya. In 1998, Rufaro and Joe attended a granite carving workshop alongside Joram Mariga and two Japanese sculptors, fundamentally shaping his artistic technique and style.

International Success and Solo Ventures

The same year, Rufaro witnessed international success during an exhibition in Belgium with Joe Mutasa, where their work garnered significant acclaim and sales. After spending many productive years under Joe’s mentorship, Rufaro launched his solo career. His contributions to the art world, particularly in 3D sculpture, have been lauded by the national arts community, culminating in his repeated accolades at NAMA.
